Josh Beck (USA) continued his Powerman Ohio win streak with his 2nd consecutive victory in the two-year old event with an impressive victory over several international athletes. Anne Curi-Preisig (USA) was the female winner.
Beck, on the strength of his bike, was able to overcome a blazing opening 8K run led by Raphael Baugh (AUS) to capture a slight advantage going into the run. Beck continued to show his strength by opening up his lead over Baugh on the .9 mile grade 7 climb off the bike and the remainder of the rolling 8K run course to finish almost 5 minutes ahead of his Aussie challenger. Denmark-bound Kevin Danahy (USA) overtook 4th place finisher Lee Sasson (USA) with a strong bike to finish in 3rd place. Glen MacNamara (RSA) rounded out the pro finishers with a 5th place finish. Jason Spong (SA) and Joshua Ritchie (USA) pulled out of the race due to hypothermic conditions.
Anne Curi-Preisig gutted out a tough bike conditions and the elements during the women's race to finish ahead of the up and coming Rebecca Moore (USA).
In the age-group division, 2005 2nd place finisher Patrick LeMay (CAN) faced a strong challenge and a 2nd run surge from Eric Fernando (USA) to capture the overall male title at the 2006 Powerman Ohio. Ohio's top duathlete, Ted Niedhardt, and Virginia's top duathlete, David Phillips, took third and fourth, respectively. In the women's age group race Kay Truax (USA) took overall honors.
The Mohican Valley Duathlon, one-half the distance of Powerman Ohio, saw an impressive duathlon field led by recent 2nd lace overall male at the 2006 USAT Duathlon Championships, Jeff Miller (PA), followed by Alex Eversmeyer (PA) and Ryan Bates (OH). Miller led from start to finish despite being pushed considerably by Eversmeyer. Bates and Andy Schmitz (OH) battled out for fourth place with Bates opening up an insurmountable lead over Schmitz going into the 2nd run. Carrie Smith (PA) looked impressive as she took female honors. Top Master Melanie Roberts (OH) finished second followed by Val Watson (OH).
Athletes know Powerman Ohio as one of the more challenging courses in the United States and on the International Powerman circuit. However, athletes experienced an additional element on Sunday as unseasonably cool temperatures and cold rain saw over 40 percent of the field withdraw due to the conditions.
