CAMP PENDLETON, Calif.-Officials from Ironman North America have announced that the 2001 Isuzu Ironman California triathlon, being held on May 19,2001 on Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base is now full.
More than 1,800 competitors are expected to toe the starting line for Isuzu Ironman California, which will take place for the second time in and around Camp Pendleton and the neighboring city of Oceanside.
More than 1,400 triathletes competed in the inaugural event in 2000, which marked the debut of Ironman triathlon in Southern California.
“We hope to build on the huge success of the inaugural Camp Pendleton event,” said Isuzu Ironman California Race Director Buzz Mills. “We think that things will be even better in 2001.”
Isuzu Ironman California joins Isuzu Ironman USA Lake Placid and Subaru Ironman Canada as Ironman North America events which are already full for 2001. Only Isuzu Ironman Florida, which opened for registration two weeks ago, still has openings among Ironman North America events.
“The fact that we have three of our events already full for next year points to the huge growth and popularity of Ironman worldwide,” said Ironman North America President Graham Fraser.
While Isuzu Ironman California is closed to general entries, a limited number of ‘Community Slots” are available. Community slots are $1,000, with that money then reserved for charity and non-profit organizations in the Oceanside/Camp Pendleton area.
