The Hy-Vee Triathlon in Des Moines, Iowa is not in the ITU's new World Championship series but the racing was top notch nonetheless. With the top payday for the day's winners of $200,000 an outstanding field of athletes vied for the win in both the men's and women's races.
In the morning's women's race, the first two places went to “the Emmas,” Emma Moffatt and Emma Snowsill, who also took the top spots a week earlier in Washington, DC. In third wsa Lauren Groves. After the early swim leader Sara McLarty of the USA had been reeled in on the bike, the field came together before the day's winner went to work. Moffatt initiated a break that would eventually result in a group of 8 staying away. The gap that this created allowed her to win as she successfully gapped Snowsill, her main competitor. In the end, the time gap was not hugely significant as Moffatt had the fastest run of the day to win convincingly. Snowsill used her great running abiliity to move through the break into second with the second fastest run of the day.

The men's race had a different dynamic as the main field largely came out of the water together and stayed that way through much of the bike. It was not that people didn't try to break away on the bike, only that they did not successfully create a gap until later in the race when Matt Reed and Stuart Hayes of Great Britain got a gap. They remained in front through the first part of the run before being overtaken by the main protagonists on the day. This group of six would eventually stay together throughout the rest of the race and fight for the podium. This group consisted of Simon Whitfield, Brad Kahlefeldt, Jan Froodeno, Kris Gemmel, Jarrod Shoemaker and Javier Gomez. It was quite a collection of talent running together and despite various surges, they entered the last stages of the race together. In the end, Whitfield had the best final push.
