2000 Olympic Triathlon Champion, Simon Whitfield, has been nominated for a prestigious World Sports Award. Whitfield was nominated in the "Athletics" category which, ironically, does not include Athletics events from the Olympic Games. The other nominees in this category include Lance Armstrong (USA - cycling) winner of the Tour de France, Halil Mutlu (Turkey - Weight lifting) gold medallist from Sydney and holder of three (3) World Records, Alexei Nemov (UKR - Gymnastics) multiple gold, silver and bronze medallist, and Jan Ullrich (GER - Cycling), Olympic Gold medallist.
The panel of judges includes a veritable "who's who" of current and former international sports celebrities. The Awards will be presented in London, ENG on January 16, 2001 by Prince Leopold of Bavaria, Prince Albert of Monaco, and Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, to name a few. Actor Roger Moore will act as host of the event
