2009 Concord ITU Duathlon World Championships
Concord, North Carolina
10-kilometre run, 40-kilometre bike, 5-kilometre run
It was a rainy and challenging day for the ITU World Championships for the elites and age groupers alike. The women's race started the day with a large group staying together throughout the first run and the bike. Gaps started to emerge as the women hit the second run. Here Vendula Frintova showed her fitness and took the lead. Silver went to Sandra Levenez and bronze to last year's third place finisher, Ana Burgos.
The men's race could not have been any closer as America's Jarrod Shoemaker outleaned France's Damien Derobert at the line for the win. Belgium's Jurgen Dereere won the bronze. The men's race formed into groups on the first run with many of the contenders up front. As the athletes got onto the bike and completed a few of the bike laps, gaps remained. Towards the end of the ride, however, the leading pack was joined by a group from behind. Heading into transition, a small break appeared but it held a very slim lead. France's Derobert was first out of transition followed by Dereere and Silva from Portugal. Shoemaker was amidst the main pack. Using the fastest run of the day, Shoemaker moved his way through those in front of him to get near the front near the end of the race. After starting a push to the line and appearing to run out of gas with about 50 meters to go, Shoemaker's great run seemed to be for second. But with one last push, he crossed the line inches in front of Derobert. It was a great win for the American.
