While it rained during the morning's elite races, the age group racing in the afternoon was chracterized by multiple hard showers that rendered the bike course, which was already technical, quite difficult. The age group racing was strong across the age groups.

Overall age group times seems pretty fast- finish times 6 minutes faster than elites. Not same course but should of been same distance. Any comments?

Classic case of many AG'ers that should be racing pro (elite)! Heck, If I was that fast i would love to have elite beside my name, even if I wasn't at the top of the pack.

The Elite race was much more technical. This is evident looking at the elite bike times. Also I heard age groupers say the courses were all short. There are only a few age groupers that could make the elite field. I wish they would try and see how difficult it is.

I used to think the same way as "shaggytour"about fast age groupers but have come to a new realisation. Age group races and elite races are really 2 totally different creatures - and results shouldn't be compared to each other. Athletes have a choice to remain in agegroup, or to become elite, and that should be seen as a legitimate choice. In the age group race you are competing using only your OWN ability + fitness for your best time on the bike - like a time trial; in elite races the bike portion is more like a crit - you have the added advantage (or disadvantage) of drafting on the bike with all its possible consequences- crashes, people who use the energy of a group to be faster but not contribute to pulling; mid-race sprints the duration and timing of which may be in someone else's hands, working together (or not) and other tactical elements. It is a huge leap to move from age group to elite - I admire those who choose to do it.

The bike course was only 22 miles for the age group race while i'm sure the pro's got the accurate distance.

My GPS confirmed that both the run and bike courses were short for the amateurs at least.
Maybe they were factoring in that the fastest athletes had to navigate through hundreds of slower athletes on a very twisty (and with the rain-slick) course.
