Because of a date conflict with events in Carlsbad, the Dannon Carlsbad Duathlon, which is the Duathlon National Championships, will be held on July 15. Dannon Carlsbad will serve as both the Pro and Age Group National Championships. Participants in the 2000 Dannon Carlsbad Duathlon are well aware that this will be one of the most challenging courses ever used for the National Championships. The 10k/40k/5k event will serve as a qualifier for the the short course Duathlon World Championships (Italy on Sept. 16) and the long course Duathlon World Championships (Powerman Holland on Sept. 9)
The 7 race national Dannon Duathlon Series dates are tentatively set as follows:
March 11 - Dannon Grenelefe. Haines City, Florida. 5k/30k/5k.
April 1 - Dannon New Orleans. 2m/10m/2m/10m/2m
May 20 - Dannon Boston. 2m/10m/2m/10m/2m.
June 10 - Dannon Alpharetta (Atlanta). 5k/30k/5k
July 15 - Dannon Carlsbad. 10k/40k/5k
August 26 - Dannon Seattle. 5k/30k/5k.
September 16 - Dannon Naperville (Chicago). 5k/30k/5k.
Each race will have a minimum purse of about $6,000, with Grenelefe, Carlsbad, and possible one other event scheduled to have a purse of $10,000 or greater. The race website, www.dannonduathlon.com, will be updated for 2001 by mid December.

Does anyone know if US pro nationals are going to be draft legal or draft illegal?

It hasn't been decided if this race will be draft legal. The race is so hilly that drafting won't make a huge difference. The race is July 15, I made a typo that I have since corrected.

Dunno if Pro Nationals will be draft legal or illegal, but having a course that hilly/technical makes for a true championship course where even if it is draft legal - the typical wheelsucker will be spit out the back on some of those climbs where drafting won't help much if at all.
Look at the splits from this years Pro Nats (draft illegal) and see how big the gaps were on the bike splits for both men/women in spite of decent run splits. Guys/girls who run well and who would normally hang in on a flatter course during the bike (wheelsucking or not) and take their shots on the 2nd run were off the back almost immediately on that course - some lost huge chunks of time on their bike split. The time difference wouldn't have been much different draft legal or not - the hills separate the strongest, no crybabies need apply.
A person who does well on that course is the strongest duathlete overall - not an opportunist who did the least amount of work hiding behind others, and whining afterwards that no one wanted to do any work or how they were not recovered fully from last race, that the 1st run was too easy, or some other such nonsense.
Draft legal or not - it won't make much difference to a really strong duathlete with no big weaknesses either running/biking on that course - I'm just glad it's gonna be used again.

The Red Zinger is on Saturday and Nationals is on Sunday. You can do the Red Zinger on Saturday and then go to the Denver airport and fly America West directly into Carslbad and do Nationals on Sunday.
