The proposed ITU World Ranking system was detailed on duathlon.com on January 1. That article is located here: http://www.duathlon.com/articles/581. Listed below are some of the modifications made before the new World Ranking System was recently approved.

The 5% (for men) and 8% (for women) time cutoffs will remain in place

A quality of field factor will be implemented. The points awarded in any race can be increased by 2-20% depending on the number of top 20 ranked athletes entered in each race.

The 2001 rankings will start by dividing each athlete's points at the end of 2000 by 10. The original proposal called for points to be divided by 20.

Athletes that have not competed in 2 years will lose all of their points

Winning a points race will be worth 200 points, instead of 100 points as originally proposed.
The World Ranking System is used for ITU's Elite Olympic distance races, and Olympic qualification is based on point totals.
