Lothar Leder and Natascha Badmann went to Ironman Malaysia as heavy favorites, but Australian Belinda Cheney and Kiwi Bryan Rhodes came away with upset victories. This is Rhode's first Ironman victory. Last year he was a DNF at Ironman Canada, sixth at Ironman New Zealand, and fourth at Ironman California. His best Ironman finish was third at Ironman Canada in 1999, where he finished just 41 seconds behind winner Chuckie V.

Belinda Cheney, just 24 years old, also scored her first Ironman victory. She did three Ironmans in 2000, finishing third in South Africa, ninth in Australia, and 23rd at Ironman Hawaii. In winning Malaysia today Cheney was faster than Badmann in all three events.
