Devonport Classic Triathlon
Sunday, March 11. Devonport, Australia
ITU points race

Australia's Chris Hill and USA's Barb Lindquist clinched the fourth round
of the 2001 St George Triathlon Australia Series in Devonport, Tasmania,
today, in convincing style. In fine autumn race conditions, Hill was in a small group that led the
men's field out of the cool Mersey River after 1.5k swim to the multi-lap
40k cycle course.

The lead group stayed together during the cycle until the final 10k run,
where Hill made his move. With training partner Luke Harrop (QLD) in hot
pursuit, Hill stepped up the speed to edge away from the lead pack to take
his second national series event for the season. Harrop chased Hill all the
way to the line for a well-deserved second place. Victoria's Bryce Quirk,
the current Australian sprint champion, took third.

The women's event was just as exciting with Barb Lindquist (USA), New South
Wales' Nicole Hackett, the current world champion, and Britain's Leanda
Cave all exiting the water together. They were followed by New South Wales'
Melissa Ashton heading a second pack, and Victoria's Emma Carney leading
the third group in desperate chase.

Carney used the cycle leg to make up for lost ground, with a single
powerhouse display which all but bridged the gap to the second chase pack.
After Lindquist and Hackett racked their bikes, Lindquist set the early
pace, and continued to storm home for the win. Hackett took out a safe
second place with a fast-finishing Carney taking a gallant third.

A crowd of 8000 spectators enjoyed the 17th Devonport Classic Triathlon,
which also carried ITU world-ranking points.
