Tim DeBoom approaches Ironman Australia still looking for his second Ironman victory. DeBoom won his first at Ironman New Zealand in 1999, and came close at Ironman Austria and Hawaii last year with second place finishes at both races. The man who may give him the most trouble is Stormin' Normann Stadler, the man who led Ironman Hawaii coming off the bike last year before finishing third. Also from the US, Lance Muzslay of Phoenix is making his first pro appearance after several top age group performances at Ironman Hawaii.
Defending champion Lori Bowden is a strong favorite in the women's race. Her 8:55 time last year ranked among the fastest of all time. Australia's Joanne King, a former World Champion and winner of Ironman Germany in 1999, hopes to challenge Bowden. Laura Drake, second at Powerman Alabama two weeks ago, is the only American woman in the field.
