Intervall Duathlon Race 2 of 6 in Swiss Duathlon Cup 4k run/16km bike, 4k run/16k bike/4k run Sunday, May 20. Zofingen, Switzerland
Paralyzed duathlete Christian Wenk, President of the Zofingen Triathlon Club, helped bring back the Intevall Duathlon. The following was recently reported in Katherine William's Triathlon Digest regarding Wenk's involvement with the race:
Zurich's Christian Wenk, the paralyzed duathlete and doctor, now has another creditial: race organizer. On Sunday in Zofingen, Switzerland, the Intervall Duathlon takes place for the first time since 1997 -- all thanks to Wenk.
The race, with an unusual format of 4k R, 16k B, 4k B, 16k B, 4k R, is part of the Swiss Duathlon Cup circuit. With registration still open on race day, Wenk is expecting another 100 competitors, on top of the 400 already signed up.
"I am really happy inside," he said on Saturday by mobile phone from the Zofingen stadium, where the race will finish. "It's always changing, being a race director. Sometimes it's hard, sometimes it's easy.
"But I have a lot of advantages. I have many people helping me. I know the people, and they know me, because I had a big presence on television after my accident (last September). I am also still working with the sponsors I had before -- instead of sponsoring just me, they are now sponsoring this race."
The Intervall Duathlon was staged in 1995, 1996 and 1997, but a turnout of only 200 in 1997 forced its cancellation. When Wenk assumed the presidency of Tri Club Zofingen last January, the project he made his first priority was the revival of this race.
He placed it on the very weekend in May that used to host the far-bigger Powerman Zofingen -- until the Powerman organizers switched their race to September. Ironically, whereas Powerman always had trouble with extreme weather, the weather looks clear and bright for Sunday.
"Making this race again was my first idea as club president, and it's become one of the best experiences I have had," Wenk, 27, said. "It is emotional for me, of course. But I am very, very lucky to have all these great people around me."
