Brion, this is being worked on as we speak. I think a decision should be out in early Feb... Are you planning or racing pro next year? Are you gonna drag Justin T out with you? Drop me a line: gganoung@osc.uscg.mil

I know everything is being worked out formally by the folks in charge of such things - but if history is any lesson - for duathlon, in the U.S., for men: all you have to do to qualify is be a pro, show up to a couple of the races where the big boys race like Powerman or Dannon - preferably not get passed by any of the women pros, and not come in so far behind the winner (the male winner..) that people think you're an age-grouper who started in the wrong wave by accident.. :)

Last year, none of the regular heavy hitter male pro's from the U.S. went to Calais. The guys that ended up representing the U.S. in the pro wave were promptly spit out the back just like they would have been at a U.S. race had they competed against our best guys on any given day.. Yes, it sounds mean - those guys are plenty fast amateurs in the U.S., but were completely outgunned against the pros in Calais..

Whatever the final method of choosing how pros qualify for worlds - be it a race with qualifier slots, a series of races with top XX finishes, or a combination of previous performance plus ability to race well in draft legal format, etc.. Bottom line is that there aren't all that many du pro men or women compared to triathlon where you have to be *really* good to get a pro slot for Hawaii, or Worlds, etc.. The best du pro guys in the U.S. are competitive at the world level and getting faster every year, but the pool is still really small so I think whatever qualifier system ultimately ends up being developed, I don't think there will be any court battles over who ultimately gets to go to worlds this year... I doubt we will have a full pro team of either men or women - I HOPE I'm wrong but I think for now I'm right.
