How does everyone setup their training, by distance or time?

I use to train by distance but in the last year have switched to time. The workouts are than specific to my training goals. I use a heart rate monitor for all my workouts to be sure that they are done in the proper zone for what I want to accomplish in that workout. For example aerobic workouts are done in zone 1 for a longer time to build aerobic base. My training week is than developed between hard and easy days but everything is based on time not distance. I still record the distance so that overtime I have a reference to check out my improvement for the same workout

I'm pretty new to this, but I plan all of my training based on distance. I switch between 1/2 marathon and duathlon "seasons", and I target specific events. I build my training schedule based on distances associated with those events.
