wetsuit allergy Reply
by AlanNewton on February 1, 2001 Mail this to a friend!
Seems I have an allergy to wetsuits. The 2 times I've used one I've broken out in a rash for 4-5 days after the day of contact. Has anyone ran into this or got any advice on how to deal with it? Thanks, Alan

You might want to try a different brand suit and see if this helps. I got a rash from whatever material my first wetsuit was made of, but was fine when I borrowed my friends Orca suit. Maybe you have an allergy to latex or natural rubber, or whatever. Make sure the suit fits, use bodyglide, and try some different brands.

good luck

Dan

In Oct 99 I had a new wetsuit made for me by Zero South Africa. After a few uses (and a few reactions) I figured out that it was the suit that was causing a "Burn-like" reaction on and around my testicles. I found eventually after a visit or two to hospital that an injection of a antihistamine seemed to help. I thought at first that the reaction may have something to do with the enviroment and tried the suit in fresh water - No luck!... Now for the interesting part - my old suit, also made by Zero, which was purchased in 1989, and all previous suits that I have had or used for the past 20 years do not give me any such reaction!!! I am still able to use my old wetsuit (although it is falling apart) without any reaction whatsoever.
After the problem with the Zero suit, I bought a Reef suit and although it also gives me a problem, the reaction is Much less and it is possible to use for short periods of time. Before diving, I coat my testicles with vaseline and after diving I wash them very well.

My guess is that there has been a change in the formulation of the material used in the manufacture of the wetsuits since the late 80's and that the solution may be to approach the manufacturers to see if the old formulation can still be purchased.
If you have any comment on the subject, please contact me at spencer@iafrica.com
