DUATHLON TRAINING Reply

How many miles are people running and biking when training for a duathlon? Does anyone know the exact amount of carbs to eat to make sure your glycogen stores are full. Is there a way to find out? Does anyone carb load the week prior to a duathlon? Any other nutrtion tips would be appreciated. Thank you

Mileage depends on what you want to achieve and time you have available i think.

At the top level, most of the guys will bike round about 400km/week and run round about 90km(sorry don't know it in miles!)
But you can get away with less.

Nutritionwise, my own personal theory is eating foods that have a medium Glycemic Index(ie Oats-that type of thing). It assists with recovery.
Other than that, eat balanced meals. Some people believe one should check diet with ones'blood group.

And yes, I think most people will carbo load during the week of a race. Again, no need to overdo it. Look at the length of the race. If its only a half standard, then there's no need to really "stock up".

What works for me is to keep pretty much with what I usually eat..which turns out to be carb focused.

Hope that helps!

It also all depends on the quality effort you put in your training.
High quality sessions, with intensive workouts cannot be achieved all the year long. So, there is no general rule. It all depends on your availabality, your motivation, objectives and so on.
I myself train 350 to 400 kms a week on the bike when everytjing goes right and run 55 to 80 kms. 2 running high quality sessions.
But when it comes to the final weeks before an objective, it focuses more on competition pace and lower mileage.

You can only concentrate on 2 major ojectives within a year, separated by 2 global training period, and the carbo loading week (full week) should only happen twice a year. This does not mean that you will only have 2 races. But you will not be able to have the same level of preparations for the other. That is the way it works with me.
