Recent news for the On-Road 2010 National Championships, there will be a change in the first run distance. As a result of a decision by the USAT Duathlon Committee, the first run will be a 5k instead of a 10k. The total race distances will be a 5k run, a 38k bike, and a 5k run. Go to duathlonnationals.com for updated course maps

Why don't they just make it a bike race! The distances definitely give the edge to the stronger cyclists. If you are going to have two 5ks then the bike distance should be 30k. I thought a few years ago it was decided that the Nationals would be the same distance as the World championships. Nothing USAT does for Duathlons makes sense.

I believe the logic is that the bike should be at least 30K and given the loops on the Richmond course, better to be longer than 30K than a few miles shorter.

Has anyone heard ANY rationale in them making the first run so short, especially for the one and only Worlds qualifier???

Big discussion about this on www.slowtwitch.com. Go to the Triathlon Forum and search "worlds du again".
Or try this link

They want to attract more beginners. That's straight from the USAT horse's mouth. Just on a trial basis.

The Nationals should mean something special. It should not be a race to attract new people to duathlon. The same goes for representing the U.S. at the Worlds. If you finish in the top 5- 10 in your age group you make the team. Qualifying down to 25th place in an age group is just taking away from the meaning of world championships. You might as well just do a citizens race and save the outlandish entry fee.

I agree, the Nationals should be for the best of Duathlon, to represnt the USA at Worlds. But to get there you need grass root events like short course Du's and regional events that will "introduce" new athletes to Duathlon. Such events as we had in the past OC, Desert Classic, Apple....were great events to qualify for worlds.
Last year I qualified for Worlds (I signed up for 2 races just in case I could not make one) and it was the greatest acomplishment and feeling I have ever had in Duathlon, I am not the best or fastest but last year I was 17th in my AG in "The World".

To clarify, the USAT proposed to the Duathlon Committee that nationals be 5-30-5. All of us on the Du Committee felt this is too short for a national championship. The compromise is to do 5-40-5 (actually 38 km at Richmond) because the total distance is the same as for tri nationals munis the swim. The ratio at Richmond will be just over 3:1, which should not significantly favor either bikers or runners.
Perhaps the ideal distance would be 6k-40k-6k. This would be almost exactly the same total distance as tri nats including the swim. And it would keep the ratio just over 3:1.
I would like to point out that nationals was often 3-30-5 in the early and mid 90's. I agree that is too short (too easy?) for a national championship, but USAT was able to argue that the shorter du nats is not unprescedented.
Finally, it was not to draw more novices. It was to draw more racers period.
