Why no discussion about the Nationals ie; conditions, course, management? Good race, bad race? Just seems odd that our Championships were just held and not any comments on the board.

I did the nationals and had a blast wanted to finish in 1 hr and 15 mins and did it in 1hr 10 so i was happy oh and got a PR on the first run was slow on the bike a lot of hills and corners my first race this distance so i was a bit over safe...
can't wait for the next one in July it was a fab race thanks to all the volanteers and athletes. come on who else....

Lots of flats - unfortunate for those who wanted to qualify for Worlds - another reason there should be more than one qualifier

I attended Nationals this year after missing it in '09 and thought the Sports backers did a nice job of running the whole weekend of events. I went out on Sat to watch some of the off-road du and also cheer on the kidz race... fun to just hang out at and talk with people. I liked the course on Sun (gotta love that 5k when your running is way behind the curve) and the weather was surprisingly good given the ominous forecasts. I saw some flats, but not anywhere near as many as in '08.

That said, I still don't like the single qualifier format that USAT forces on us. They might have had a large turnout for Nats, but the total racer numbers at "qualifying events" are actually down when you compare to the totals during years when there were multiple qualifiers. I also don't believe that the single qualifier format results in the strongest team at Worlds. A few too many fast duathletes get left out (injury, illness, date conflicts, etc) when you need to plan your life around a single arbitrary date. That's not to mention the need to finish the bike without a flat or mechanical. There were a few multi-time Team USA folks who flatted and DNF'd on Sun.

What's your race status Don?

Lee

I went to Nationals and flatted on the second lap of the bike. It was very disappointing given the time and money I spent preparing for and traveling to this race. If I had qualified, this would have been my 4th time going to Worlds. Needless to say, I am not a fan of the single qualifier for all the reasons Lee mentioned above.

Other than the open joints on the bridge that caused so many flats, it was a well run and exciting event. The kids race was fun, the food and beer were very good, the schwag was great and the live band was a nice touch. I just wish they had put some carpet on those open bridge joints!

I'll be back to try again next year...

You are way luckier than me- you have already been to worlds. I saw this as my chance and was well on pace but flatted into the 3rd loop on the bike. I am crushed. How do you get over the disappointment?

Hi Lee,
I decided this year that I would just concentrate on running to see if I could better my times from the past 5 years. Got down to under 19 minutes for the 5k but after doing a hard track workout I aggravated my IT band and have been sidelined for the past month. It's tough getting old. I'm hoping to salvage the season and maybe get some good races in the Fall. I'm still a little disappointed from 2009 Nationals when there was no volunteer at a junction and the course was not marked for the 10k for the first wave. I lost a good 2-3 minutes plus I let that ruin the rest of my race which I blame myself. I know better. Anyway I'm thinking about AZ in 2011 but only if they have the 10k 40k 5k distance. I need the extra few minutes off the 10k to stay in reach of the stronger bikers and a 5k is just not fair unless the bike is 30k. Of course this is coming from a runner's perspective.

Hi Jim,

I am so sorry for your disappointment. It's a tough pill to swallow when you do everything right and it still doesn't go your way. I decided to use the money I would've spent going to Scotland to plan some other fun and exciting things to look forward to in the coming months.

I will be competing at Long Course Nationals in Oklahoma City in July. Maybe you might want to consider doing that race. It should be fun, and there may be a Long Course Worlds this year - USAT has not decided yet. I am doing some other local races too, so that gives me some goals to work for.

Oh - and I am taking my kids to Disney World. Nothing like roller coasters and giant mice to cheer you right up!

Don't let this disappointment defeat you, for then you will have truly lost. Keep working toward your goals, and have fun. Maybe I will see you in Oklahoma?

Take care,
IDu

Thanks for nice note. I know it's time to get over it, also to get better at changing tires I think... .

Enjoy giant mice!

Nationals should be the same distance that the World's distance is,just does not make any sense unless you are the Cash register. Then there should be more then one World Qualifier, too many obstacles can keep a person away from the finish line.
