Can somebody PLEASE tell me anything about Andrea Ratkovic? Is this the same woman who used to tear up the running roads? Good God I remember watching her run in the Grandma's Marathon back in 1995. She was absolutely amazing. I actually had the opportunity to speak with her after the race, and I was in absolute awe of her. She is an extraordinary athlete and person. I can't believe she's doing duathlons now. I thought she had a terrible achilles injury after the 1996 Trials. I hope she returns to marathoning; she graced the sport like no other woman before or since. I'm sure she'll do the same for duathlons.

http://www.duathlon.com/forums/Talk/130 - that page has more info on Andrea. It is the same person. She will be racing Powerman Tennessee on April 8, and hopefully Dannon New Orleans this weekend.

Yes, she is the same Andrea who ran track for Oklahoma and competed in the '96 Olympic marathon trials. And yes, she still is an extraordinary athlete and woman. Enough personality for ten outgoing people! And one of the fiercest competitors you're likely to ever meet. And yes she did sustain a potentially career-ending achilles injury shortly after the '96 trials. She rehabilitated herself on the bike and turned pro in about her second year of racing. I met her when she first started racing bikes and knew immediately that she was something special, one of those athletes who comes along only once in a generation. If she hadn't torn her achilles who knows where she would have gone in marathoning--she was well on her way. She's not built like a biker, more like a marathoner, but uses off-the-scale aerobic ability and relentless competitive drive to more than hold her own at the world-class level. Duathlon and maybe even triathlon (I believe she was a high school champion swimmer) may prove to be her ultimate ticket. If so, those sports will benefit because this woman has charisma to spare. That, and she definitely can carry the mail.

I am very new to multisport events and have been scouring different websites. It was to my great surprise and pleasure that I saw this wonderful name again. This athlete was the brightest of stars in the marathoning world but was stopped abruptly with food poisoining in the 1996 Trials and then a second achilles rupture later that year. I, as well as many many others I'm sure, have been waiting for her arriveal back on to the running scene. I guess this will have to do! I am very happy to see that she is doing something where running is involved. She is an absolute gem, this one, and a beauty to watch and behold. Not only is she an extraordinary athlete, but she is also angelic as a person. Yes, she is wild and crazy in her own right (tattoos, piercings, an occasional shaved head), but she is also a very genuine and humble person. I once spoke to her, and she said something I will never forget. She said, "Who is a better athlete---me who finishes a marathon in two and half hours or the runner who finishes in 4 or 5 hours? I don't know about you, but I don't think I could run for that long! I just happen to run faster, but that doesn't necessarily make me better." I love Andrea, and all of you will grow to love her as well. I'm sure of it.

I watched Andrea at the Tennessee Powerman, and it was truly inspiring to see her push on through that race. I honestly didn't think she was going to start the second run after seeing her slump over her bike and then plop on the ground to put her running shoes on. She did it ever so slowly, but she did it. Andrea has been sick with strep throat and has not run or ridden her bike in two weeks. She stayed with me during her visit to College Grove. I had been following her bike racing and duathlon racing prior to her coming here. I know Andrea thought she might be well enough to be competitive here, and she wanted to put on a good show for everybody, but it just wasn't meant to be this time. I want her to know that we still support her, will continue to follow her, and know that she is a bright star destined to shine.
Thank you everybody for having your big race here in little College Grove.

Just a note of warning to Andrea, keep an eye on your urine for the next week to ten days. If it is dark see your MD immediately. Strenuous exercise during the course of a strep infection can bring on post-strep glomerial mephritis wherein the viris attacks and damages the membranes in your kidneys allowing blood to pass through. This condition takes a considerable time to repair and should be monitored for 12-18 months.

Hi,

Just looking around and saw this message board all about my sister--how amazing, as she is!
She's biking with team800.com now and they have their own website and currently have an awesome write up on her if you want to take a look.

This is her website, and it lists an email address for her. She lives about 30 miles from me, so I don't get to see her much since she's in Norman. Plus, she kind of trains on her own. I think she's really injured right now which is a damn shame.

I heard through the unfortunate grapevine that Andrea hasn't been able to run a step since Ralph's. I think it's a severe injury to her Achille's tendon. I hope we haven't seen the last of her.
