I have been fairly inactive all my life. I would very much like to start participating in duathlons. I work full time, attend school part time and have a three kids so I don't have a lot of spare time. Please tell me how to begin my training in a way that won't kill me or discourage me. Thanks!

First - let me say congrats on wanting to participate in an awesome sport that this is. And am a beginner as well. I have 3 boys (5, 3 and 19 months), my husband is gone in the military (training in Georgia) and has been since September - so I am a married single mom of 3 boys and a 3/4 time student. That being said - I just want to say that it is possible to exercise, you just need to get out and do it. My first step that I have taken into this sport was to start running. I follow the couch to 5k for my running (you can google it - oh and there is a podcast for it too). I have treadmill so I run on that or I take my kids running with me (I have a stroller and my oldest son rides his bike) We go running til we hit the park. They get the reward of playing at the park when we are all done (it helps to get time with the kids and your training). I try to run 3 days a week and ride my bike 3 days and rest 1 day. I also ride my bike to the grocery store, to school and everywhere I can - but I only do 3 days of serious training. Don't forget to eat healthy and get some weight training in there too.

Like I said - I am a beginner and these are the steps that I have taken. I have already competed in 2 5k's. I haven't competed in any duathlons yet (the races were too far away from where I am and I wasn't ready). But I am confident that I am ready for one this fall or next spring. Set a goal - and start working towards it.

If you can afford it, hire a local coach or a club that you can train with.
