Powerman OH/Mohican Valley Reply

Props to Fat Rabbit Racing for putting together what ended up being a pretty epic pair of races this morning. Powerman Ohio and the Mohican Valley Duathlon were contested in rainy, upper-40/lower-50 degree weather on as challenging a course as I have ever been on. Major climbs were featured on both the run and the bike.

Josh Beck won Powerman Ohio for the second time, and Jeff Miller posted a great bike split en route to winning the Mohican Valley Du. I unfortunately don't know the women's winners off the top of my head.

Ditto on the props to FRR. They did a great job considering Mother Nature's wrath once again. Beautiful bike course (smooth roads) with one devilishy steep climb at the half-way point of the loop. The run course put the power in Powerman -- .8 mile climb. Not so fun going up, a blast coming down to the finish. And of course, great Wendy's chili to warm up your innards at the finish.

Josh Beck must've had a MONSTER ride as he had several minutes on the 2nd place pro going into T2. Amazing watching even the elites struggle to take their helmets off and change their shoes using icicles...errr...fingers.

Not sure who the age group winners were, but I know Carrie Smith of Zanesville, OH won the Powerman women's race (catching a few pros en route). I believe Melanie Roberts (USAT women masters athlete of 2004) won the masters division.

Thanks to everyone for having a great attitude. Sort've helped everyone else to get thru the challenge.

By day's end, not a cloud to be found in the sky. Harumppph?

See you next year. Note to self: TRAIN MORE!

Another thanks to FRR for sticking with the race. It was an extremely tough race- worthy of the name Powerman! Weather-wise it was similar to Zofingen last year. I seriously thought I was going to lose my lead in T2 as I couldn't get my shoes or helmet off. I had visions of my running up the hill with my helmet on and in socks!

The bike course was great, a little bit of everything. The only reason I had a great ride was that it was raining, we had a headwind on one section, and I could squeeze up the two hills in my 41x21. In reality I was as miserable as everyone else, but I'm used to the weather here in PA!

Thanks again and if you didn't do it this year put it on your calendar for next year!
Josh

Great race. As usual in inclement weather, the worst part was the pre-race waiting for the start. Frozen hands were certainly an issue, biggest problem for me was I couldn't sqeeze my water bottle to get anything out during the ride. I enjoyed the two little ass-kickers on the bike course, a nice chance to get out of the aero bars and use some different muscles. Sure was lonely on that second lap, didn't see another soul the whole lap. It was a great moral boost to see some blue sky on the second run.

Congrats to Fat Rabbit and participants for an awesome day.

powerman ohio was brutal! not only did fat rabbit give us probably one of the toughest courses in u.s. in terms of combo of bike and run but they had to add the cold rain and wind. i couldn't feel my toes or fingers after the bike so i was one of weak who pulled out and couldn't finish. i'll be ready next year.

good job fat rabbit. well run inspite of the conditions.

Anyone else had sore quads today? I felt like I did after participating in Ironman. Ohio has to be the toughest Powerman. Does anyone have perspective to agree?

Why does every time I come to Ohio the weather suck?

It's way tougher than NC that's for sure. Without weather issues the course is much harder, with yesterday's weather the difference is huge.

Well, a 40% chance of showers turned into 100%. All in all a pretty good place to race, especially if you're a mountain goat. Any idea what the grade and length of the "39x25 hill" was? Don't you think we need a nick-name for the run "hill" and the bike "hill"? I did the MV Du and my quads are wasted. Can't wait for the results to confirm my (AgGp-2nd?) placing suspicions. Where will they be posted? The FRR Results site-page only has 2005 and earlier.

The toughest course I've ever done. I didn't finish either Dudog. It's got to be disappointing for the Fast rabbits that ohio only had about 100 athletes. I think they had 100 last year too. In my opinion this one of the best duathlons around.

Thanks everyone for the compliments. We appreciate the support after 3 loooooong days. It's the words of support and encouragement from athletes like Josh Beck, Gary Moneysmith and Alex Eversmeyer and countless others that help sustain our passion for this event, the sport and our events. Thanks.

Congratulations to Josh Beck, Anne Curi-Preisig, Patrick LeMay, Carrie Smith, Kate Truax and Jeff Miller for their overalls on Sunday. Patrick drove all the way from Quebec to participate. That's awesome!

I think a big shout out needs to not only go out to the athletes who participated but members of the FRR crew and the great volunteers who stood in the rain to make certain the event went smoothly. The volunteers were out there long after the event was over for most of you so hats off to them.

I love this course. Not only is this where I grew up (my parents live 2 miles away) and lived for my first 20 years but it's also my favorite place to go train. I wanted to race so badly on Sunday that I took a break from set-up each day and ran the course.

What was suprising when we looked at the results was that there was over a 40% DNF/DNS impact because of the weather. The weather definitely caught a number of people off-guard as we and everyone else were expecting a much better forecast.

The best part was that in inspite of all the elements that mother nature threw at us that everyone had a safe experience to, during and after the event. That is what really matters. Also, it was great to see the smiles as athletes finished.

One of our challenges continues to be getting the right date and time period to hold Powerman Ohio. We plan to continue to press USAT for better communication and planning with dates for Mason and the IPA is working with the ITU and the other Powerman events for a more robust partnership.

Thanks again everyone. God Bless you and we'll see everyone at the 07 Powerman Ohio and Mohican Valley Duathlon.

Craig

P.S. Napoleon, I hope you enjoyed your tator tots. We had hot chili. You're too funny.:)
