My first race: Coors Light, San Diego 1992. I thought I was hot Sh*%: decent runner, first year on the bike and I was going to win my age group. A couple of problems: I knew nothing about serious 5K training (or HRM's) or anything about biking, so I try to keep up with the leaders on the first run and totally blow, and then get passed by about 500 people on the bike. Finished middle of the pack and was totally humiliated. But, I had fun and I have been racing ever since (decent age-grouper and masters).
So, no matter what happens, keep your head up and learn as much as you can. Every race is different and the people at the races are great (well, MOST of them!).
