David Thompson wins second straight Powerman Alabama title while two pros claim Whistlestop crowns and cash.

Don't look for David Thompson to call the Alabama Department of Labor because he was paid the same as somebody who worked half as much as he did.
The duathlete from St. Paul, Minn., is content winning his second straight Powerman Alabama race in Irondale on Sunday and the $750 that came with the title.
Thompson and Amy Kloner are professionals who won the overall male and female titles of this cycling and running race. However, two other professionals - Billy Edwards and Anne Preisig - received the same cash prize for running the shorter Whistlestop Duathlon.

The top five finishers of each Powerman and Whistlestop race split a $4,990 cash purse. The Powerman has a 53-kilometer bike race sandwiched between two 8K (five-mile) runs; the Whistlestop has a 28K bike and two 4K runs.
Thompson, 30, said offering equal prize money in the two events was a smart move by race organizers to get more people to compete.
"If I could, I'd try to do both of them," Thompson said, "but they're run at the same time."
Race director Therese Bynum said more prize money in the Powerman might have pulled in another five pros. Offering the Whistlestop prize money brought an additional 20 to 30 runners to the field, she said.
Despite earning the same money, Bynum said professionals would likely not garner the same notoriety for themselves and their sponsors in the Whistlestop race.
Edwards, the Whistlestop male winner, said he had come to town expecting to run the Powerman. He called his coach when he heard about prize money and opted to make the move.
"I get to save my legs, pick up the same paycheck and pay my airfare," said the Virginia Beach, Va., native who trains in Boulder, Co.

Preisig said the Whistlestop fit her schedule better. The mother of two has her sights on the national championship race in two weeks.
"My goal is to do well at nationals so I can do well at the world championships," the 40-year-old from Falmouth, Mass., said.
First-year UAB medical student Hallie Blunck said she had no clue how much she earned for being second in the Whistlestop. Once told, the 23-year-old Mobile native living in Mountain Brook said her $600 prize will come in handy.

"It doesn't hurt, not with school bills," she said.
Local favorite Deanna Frank was bidding for her first Powerman Alabama title and, despite trailing as the second run began, felt she had a shot. Kloner, a first-year pro, knew she had to get the most out of her time on the bike to pull out the win.
"I didn't expect (to win), I just was hoping to leave with some dignity," she said.
Frank, of Greystone Ridge, couldn't make her expected push and wound up second after she injured her left foot.
"It's disappointing but when something like that happens I start thinking about my other races for the rest of the year," she said. "I don't want to be out for the season."
Kloner, Frank and Bianca Simpson placed first, second and third, respectively, despite being assessed a four-minute penalty for accidentally not running three-tenths of a mile of the run course. The penalty did not affect their order of finish but Gail Kattouf wound up fifth behind Brooke Harris by five seconds.
