Broke chain Why? Reply
by dawghair on May 21, 2008 Mail this to a friend!
Hello

I have a quick question. I have my first duathlon coming up on Saturday and I am having some major anxiety do to my chain fall off on my bike last week and my chain breaking this morning.

Maybe I am shifting wrong. This is what I have noticed. When attacking a Hill I will lift myself off the seat and rock slightly back and forth. Sometimes I need to change gears, but if I change into a larger gear while standing and pedaling the chain will fall off or in the case it broke.

Is standing and changing gears something I should not be doing?

Please advise

Thanks

chain break very rarely. Tour riders do huge stages, hills no one will stress a chain more than they, rarely do you hear of one breaking.

Was the chain old? Do you lube frequently?

bike shop should be able to check to ensure no set up issues contributing to failure

I have about 12oo miles on the chain and I keep it lubed.

I am hoping this was just a freak thing

if your chain is "falling off" the front, you likley need to adjust your front derailleur. if the limiters aren't set right and you place enough torq on it, it will come off the chain rings. i agree w/ advise to have the bike shop check things over when you go in for a new chain. i also agree that breaking chains are rare and pros shift w/out issue while climbing all the time but you need to watch the force you are applying to the pedals while shifting. you are better off doing a slightly soft pedal while changing gears. your components will thank you for it.
