tech question: pump Reply

Hi,

I have a set of H3's and a disc wheel. Dilemma: the recessed area where the valve stem is doesn't accomodate a normal pump valve attachment. You have to use the "hash pipe". Two things bite about this set up.

There doesn't appear to be any pumps sold with the hash pipe attachment. I've had to buy a standard pump, cut the valve head off, insert the hash pipe into the hose and secure with a hose clamp.

and, filling your tires is a two person job. One to hold the hash pipe on to the tire value while person #2 works the pump. I've not been agile enough to manage to hold the hash pipe on with one hand and work the pump with the other (I'm sure it's been amusing watching me try).

There's gotta be a better way. I called the HED folks, and my bike shop...no solution. it is what it is.

any suggestion would be much appreciated.

Cheers!

Mike

Mike, I solved the disc wheel inflation challenge in this way. First, I bought a Silca model crack pipe which is pretty low profile; the "hose end" of the Silca crack pipe can be fit into the presta hole of the standard chuck on my Topeak floor pump and can be locked in place with the chuck lever. It sticks out of the chuck just enough so that the crack pipe will fit in the inflation cutout while the chuck itself remains outside the cutout. Second, I hunted in my socket collection for the size which will just wedge into the inflation cutout of my disc wheel behind the crack pipe head and will hold it in place while I work the pump. With a little practice, you can make quick solo work of the task.

Lee, thanks for the info! I'll give this a shot.

There used to be a "third hand" strap that cradled the chuck and attatched to itself over the tire and wheel, Haven't seen it around.
