Training for 10 Miler and First Time Duathlon Reply
by schweers on June 16, 2008 Mail this to a friend!
Hi

I am an avid runner, and have done several marathons, and now have limited myself to doing 10 mile races. My husband and I decided recently that we would love to try a duathlon. He is just starting out running, and is an excellent road bike rider. So with his biking and my running, we can motivate each other. My question is, will training for our first duathlon, affect my training for my 10 miler? If so, can anyone recommend how I should train for both at the same time? We are doing a beginner duathlon, 5k,30k5k in July. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Oh, my next 10 miler is in August!

in my opinion

Your 10-mile run race training will be more than sufficient for the two 5kms you need to run in a duathlon.

Advice
- don't run the 1st 5km too hard, because the 2nd will hurt after the 30km ride
- practice running off the bike a few times before the race, a brick workout
- be sure to practice eating/drinking strategy for the race

also work on your transitions i.e going from the run to the bike and from the bike to the run go to a track and set up your own transition site go around the track get on the bike(remember your helmet has to be on and clicked or your out!) practice getting into your bike shoes on the bike go around a few times practice coming out of your bike shoes on the bike get off the bike(your bike must be racked before you take off your helmet)get you shoes on (get some lace locks) and go around the track. i know this sounds stupid but a fast T1 and T2 makes a big difference. have fun!!!!

Thank you again for your advice! And just to clarify, to my training that I am also doing for my 10 miler in August, does not need to be adjusted accept to add bike rides? I was going to bike ride on T,TR and Saturday will be my long bike ride. Mondays and Fridays I do about 5 miles, and Wednesdays are about 6-8 for now!
So when should I do my brick workout?

i really depends on when your DU is, i like to do a brick at least once a month, depending on how close the race is you should try to do a couple keep the distance around the distance you will be racing.good luck and good racing
