I use the aerobar mounted Profile system but never really liked it. the whole straw in the face thing and there is no room to mount by cycle computer on my aerobars (i have really short bars) with the water bottle there.
I've been googling the aero situation with the various water bottle set up and get conflicting info.. so, I thought I would ask the real experts.. the people on du.com. In fact, one of the ariticles indicated it actually improves overall aerodynamics to have a profile aero bar bottle set up (interesting..)
thoughts on down tube, bottom tube, behind the saddle? and yes, I understand if you aren't adept enough to grab and drink without breaking aero all the talk on where's the most aero place to mount the bottle is moot.
also, am I the only person that thinks it's silly to spend $80 on a carbon bottle cage because it's 1.2 oz lighter than the $6 plastic cage? my guess is 99% of us have our real weight saving opportunities on our midsections not our bikes.
thanks in advance for your thoughts
Cheers
Mike

Yes carbon bottle cages are proof that triathletes will throw sick money at anything carbon.
My take on water bottles:
Rear mounted - very aero, but bottle access takes some practice, bottles can fly out over a bump and oh yeah, swing that leg high over the seat when you do your "newspaper boy" running mount or the consequences are disasterous for you and your (future)family
Down tube - best all around for convenience, safety, access, and now studies show the aero aint that bad at all
Aero bar mounted - most aero, but straw can poke you, little yellow thing pops out and if your bike is knocked over in the rack, you lose your water. I was treated to this after R1 at Desert Classic last year. Nothing like a 21 mile ride in the desert without water!
For longer distance I like a combo of downtube and aero bar mount.

behind the seat is been shown to be farily bunk (awkward to get to and that causes speed robbing turbulence, wrongly positioned and that causes speed robbing turbulence) as compared to other methods. BUT these guys in the video - if you have 5-600$ to spend - have done it as good as it really can be done. most people that do behind the seat saw it elsewhere and assumed it is great and the cool tri thing to do and then when they set theirs up, it sticks up much to high (creates made turbulence), has a ton of extra crap (tubes, 2 odd CO2 sticking off like fingers, blah blah), weighs like 5 pounds, and the next thing you know, it is now a liability. I use down tube and win races doing so. good placement, proven to be pretty darn aero, easy to reach for causing less awkward turbulence and drag when you do reach..

Just ask 2 of the top stage 4 TT guys Schumacher and Cancellara.. one with seat tube and one with down tube mounted bottles respectively (other top 5 guys did not even have bottles IIRC)... ever wonder why the tour TT riders NEVER use a behind the seat setup while they do use every other type of aero advantage from helmets, to special dimple clothing to shoe covers to wheels and forks/frames & ceramic bearings... but no rear mounted bottles.. hmmm
