Just thought that some of you might like to know that TRI CAN announced that there will be no qualifiers for next year. If you would like to know more about how to qualify go to: www.triathloncanada.com under notices where it says the following:
Due to the recent announcement by the ITU of the early season race, slated for May 28-31 in Geel, Belgium, Triathlon Canada will open qualification to athletes via the following schedule:
November 17-December 15
-Current National Duathlon Team athletes
December 15-January 10, 2004
-All interested athletes that are current members of their provincial triathlon association
-Athletes must submit their 2003 race resume to show fitness.

I saw the post on TriCan and could not believe my eyes. The U.S. has qualifiers, but we can't manage any? I do not want to go to World's without having to really qualify, so I guess I will focus on some other big races , and Canadian Championships to qualify for 2005.

I feel the same way, but it's not TRICAN's fault. Blame the ITU. I would hazard to guess that no RD's want any part of qualifiers for Du Worlds in May. Besides they would've had to have known about the World's date 6 months ago if they were even remotely interested in putting on a qualifier. No time now to secure police, race site etc.
Any idea where 2005 World's is going to be held? I heard a rumor that Calgary was bidding on it?
Hopefully the ITU won't place it in Iceland in January.....wooo-hooo!

It's sad that I will have to go race in the U.S., or elsewhere, to get recognized as a CANADIAN pro duathlete. Without 2004 qualifiers, there is not an opportunity to race in a recognized pro race in Canada until the Canadian Championships in October. I agree with you "crazylegs", about it not being diresctly TriCan's fault, but presumably countries like the U.S. has the same prep. time as us, and managed to organize qualifiers. It's a dud, that's all.

So no back up the packers need apply???? Oh well --- That's the date for the National Capital Race weekend, so won't bother about Belgium.
But, maybe I could have finally "qualified"!

How do they plan to choose the elite team?
I think this is a unique chance for Trican to be innovative and come up with the first-ever indoor qualifier. Not only would it be fun, it'd be easy to standardize; you could have duathletes from all over Canada competing on the same day at different venues, sort of like the indoor rowing championships that are held on Concept rowers.
Tropicgirl - good work at OTFAs. Are you going to Nats?

Greg: probably the same criteria for elites as AG's, but this is just a guess. I would think number of wins or top 3 finishes....
You thinking of going? I'll pass and beat up on old guys in 2004 then go to nationals for 2005 world's.
I also like the idea of indoor qualifying, but do the bike on a velodrome. Who's got the big grapefruits now!!!

Yes! One less race to crash at this year.
Seriously though... Has there ever really been a trial at Canadian nationals? It is pretty much if you can afford the trip to Europe, you can go to worlds.
There is talk of having a Grand Prix race in Calgary this year to go along with the Arbour Lake Triathlon/Duathlon. It would be in the north end of Calgary (approximate altitude of 1400m). Should be some good prize money. Talk to the guys at Multisports Canada.

Kyledu....at the smaller regional qualifiers you really have to qualify,(at least here in the east) not like Nationals where there's like 14 spots and 4 or 5 are actually earned. The rest just pony up the dosh and off you go, that's if you've got a few thousand burning a hole in your pocket. It's not necesarily about the quality of the team, but keeping the ITU's coffers full.
