Who else thinks NBC's will suck once again of the Hawaii Ironman ?

It'll be crafted so that it appeals to the widest audience possible...which keeps ratings high, which interests sponsors, which keeps WTC in business which is ultimately good for triathlon.

I'm not trying to start the "race fees are too high and you can't get into events anymore" thread. Bottom line is that more exposure = more sponsors = earnings for RD's = more races = yada yada yada.

But yes, the NBC coverage will likely suck yet again.

NBC's will suck. OLN's coverage every thursday has been good though.

But, what is sucking?

It is on tv and it is primetime. So I guess it is 100% better than not on at all.

The thing that annoys me is all the human interest stuff. Yes several people overcome adversity to do, and usually finish, the race. However, everyone has thier own individual adversity. Is it not insulting the rest of us to focus so heavily on a few select individuals, rather than covering the race as a whole. Hell, last year we did not even see the men on the bike. How can they entirely leave out the section of the race that makes up over half of the total time and has been where the big moves are made the past few years?!?!

The only network coverage of your sport and you have to knock it.

Get a life.

Will NBC's coverage suck is like asking will CBS's coverage of the TDF suck. Of course it will for the purest's that wanna see the "race". Not the side bar stories of some "never-could-be" that trained 6 months and finished (or not) to show Billy-Bob Six-Pack that he too can be an "ironman". Yeah right!
You can by DVD's of the TDF, so you should be able to obtain one for Hawaii that isn't full of crap.

My favourite part of NBC Ironman coverage is the way they take a story I can appreciate and actually find quite moving - like the Ironman Fireman guy from NY - and beat me over the head with it: (a) as though I'm an idiot and I won't get how great this story is unless they spend 40% of their coverage dwelling on it, and; (b) until I never want to hear about the person again. Now that's good television.

"The only network coverage of your sport?" Primetime coverage of IronMan is an embarrasment for any serious multisport athlete. It's a freak show of 350 lb knucklheads who got a lottery pick, ex-pro footballers, tear-jerker: "...this was my little girl's last wish" stories and the like. It's NOT a sporting event the way they cover it. Tell me how often you're going to see the lower half of anyone's body on the bike: they give you such poor techincal coverage it's hard sometimes to count their cadence! I prefer OLN's Summer Sport Zone show with it's 30 second clips of Affoltern, etc... I won't be watching IronMan, I'll be training.

But, but, but, they're all winners!

Seriously, I probably won't watch it because it bores me, unless I happen to be flipping channels and happen across it. Why does it bore me? The human interest stories. Just like when I just plain stopped watching the 2000 summer Olympics about halfway through because I couldn't take it anymore.

The calculus for NBC, then, is the following: Do they get enough regular (that is, people not from multisport, swimming, cycling, and running) viewers based on their coverage to justify the loss of us folks who, for example, leave because we don't get at least a five-second clip of somebody, ANYBODY, on a bicycle. It's a business decision. They'll only keep the coverage the way it is as long as it gets the ratings. Meanwhile, I'll be out training like bizarro--probably a bit slower.

Some of you just don't ge it. It's all about money. It's all about viewership. If NBC puts on a show that is very technical, how many people will watch the show, maybe 100,000. If NBC puts on a show that is inspirational and lovey-dovey, how many viewers will they get, millions. It's all about money. NBC puts together a program that will attrack the most viewers. If you don't like the coverage or think the coverage will suck, then may I suggest you plan a long run or bike ride during that time slot. GET OVER IT!!!!
