One Day Camps Reply
by Sandman on November 24, 2003 Mail this to a friend!
I was looking at the Triathlon Academy one day workshop for $150. Do people actually find these things helpful. Seems like all it is is three workouts with a coach. Is it really worth it or is it just another throwaway of discretionary income?
I had one guy tell me that the most they learned from the camp was that it was more of a sales pitch to sign up for the monthly coaching fee than an actual learning experience.

Sandman,

Single day camps are good if your dealing with just one discipline or if you are very inexperienced at what the camp aims at.

If you are not a total beginner then a one day tri camp may be a bit beneath you. However, when I have done single day camps I often find I am swamped with the very basic questions the newcomers simply don't know (what to wear, how to shift, elastic laces, etc.)

If you are a more experienced athlete I think you will get much more out of longer camps or one on one sessions. These will do a better job of addressing your specific interests.

Clearly this will depend on a few things- like who's running the camp! I went to one when I first got into multisport and it was so-so. And they had teachers who were multiple IronMan winners in 2 out of 3 dosciplines: household names. The third was the recognised swim expert at the time. You won't get enough technical feedback in this sort of forum to really see benefit.

I just went to Coach Troy's website. You have to be kidding me!!!!! $1250 a month!!!! all the way down to $400 a month. If you have that much extra money to throw around, I sure hope he guarantees results, plus sponsorship, plus free back massages. I just find it amazing that people actually sign up for these things. How many people are getting the same individualized workout programs. If we have that much extra money to throw away for these training programs then we have no right to complain for $150 entry fees for Olympic distance races.
