I have been managing this problem for about 5 years. There's a little muscle called the piriformis which is in your butt. Sometimes this muscle will get inflamed or spasms which causes a lot of pain to the extent that you can't run. The only thing I've found that helps is rest, massage and a good chiropractor. This muscle can also cause sciatica problems if not treated properly. When you first feel the pain back off for a few days. If you continue to run hard you may loose the whole season. A good sports doctor or chiro should provide you with some stretches that may alleviate the pain. Good luck

Hey Don, I guess that "pain in the butt" didn't keep you from winning a 5k in Sept. in New Bloomfield, Pa! Not bad for an old man, an injured old man, at that! Congratulations! By the way, when are you going to start doing duathlons again? Now that you live in PA, there are plenty of races within a 2-2:30 drive from the Harrisburg area. And the ITU short distance world's are in Georgia this year, so you may as well come out of retirement!

The first question you need to ask is "why is the muscle in spasm?". The problem most often lies distant to the source of pain. My guess from what little info you have given is that you have the classic multisport overuse syndrome: tight medial rotators(tensor fasciae latae, gluteus minimus & medius) that "overpower" the smaller and weaker lateral rotators, one of which is the piriformis. Weak adductors (groin muscles)can also come into play as the lateral rotators "take up the slack" and attempt to stabilize the leg during fast running. Cycling is often the cause as it overdevelops these muscles (medial rotators and the glut maximus)and causes the antagonists to get "strained" when you throw in a hard running effort. I do strengthening exercises daily for the adductors/lateral rotators/hamstrings/hip flexors and stretch the medial rotators/quads/glut maximus as often as possible. Dons suggestions are very good as well and it will keep you going like Jeff who is closing in on the BIG Five OH! Good luck.

I agree with Don - a good chiropractor is a must! I had the same problem in 2000 - I had just gotten a new bike that was totally aero and built up over 2 months to doing 100 milers on the weekend ( My prior biking was doing up to 100 milers for 1 1/2 years). After about 3 weeks of this I started getting this pain in the butt, and since I was running long and hard also, I blamed it on the running and stopped running for a few months. The problem did not go away so I finally figured out that it was the bike that was causing it. I was sooo much more aero (my back was completely flat if I rode on my bars) that I was stretching the hell out of my piriformis. As The jock doc says - starting those excersizes he mentioned really helped to stengthen the area. And I had to completely reconfigure my bike setup. Unfortunately I was doing Hawaii in a few weeks!

Hi Jeff,
I don't know if I want to come out of retirement. The way you are racing everything from ultras to short and long duathlons I'd really get my butt kicked. I am considering a comeback for 2003 when I turn 50 so watch out. My 5k's are a little slower but I'm a lot better on the bike now. Who knows I may show up at one duathlon this coming season to see if I want to make the commitment for next year. I miss the good times, friends and beer. Good luck this season and I'll be checking race results for your name.
Don
